Ruff Review: Bugsy’s Box + Deal Alert + A Giveaway!

As many of you know, Shelby and I were big fans of BarkBox. Truth be told, we simply love receiving mail so the idea of a subscription box for dogs never gets old! I was super excited when Bugsy’s Box contacted me to write a review and made sure to capture the exact moment when Shelby saw her box of goodies opened for the first time.

photo 7

You can’t tell by Shelby’s expression but she’s super excited!

She gave her Bugsy’s Box a good sniff. In total, there were 5 items in the box. The first thing she came across was the Tall Tails Dog Pocket Towel. She knew there were treats buried beneath it!

photo (6)

Inside the box were Wylie’s Naturals all natural chicken jerky treats. Although the packaging looked a little mom ‘n’ pop, I was happy to see that they are made in the U.S. and contain no additives, by-products, fillers, or preservatives. After uploading the below photo to my blog, I suddenly realized that the package says to keep this in the refrigerator, something I haven’t been doing! I’m happy to report that Shelby loved these treats (but I did stop feeding them to her when I realized I wasn’t refrigerating them).

photo 8

Also in our Bugsy’s Box was It’s Purely Natural 100% Natural Dog Treats by Loving Pets. These are also 100% made in the U.S. and contain no additives, by-products, or fillers. Horray! Although Shelby is finicky, she also loved these treats! Plus, this bag will last a long time.

photo 9

Remember that Tall Tails Pocket Towel? I was happy to see something useful (as opposed to edibles) in one of these boxes but I wasn’t sure I’d have any use for it. Boy, was I wrong! Since receiving this box, I’ve used this towel multiple times after rainstorms. When we come into the apartment from a soaking walk, I stick my hands in the towel’s pockets and pat Shelby dry with this. Not only is the towel extremely absorbent, but the action of “hugging” her with the towel seems to keep her calm which I really appreciate.

photo 10

A package of Barksters Treats in sweet potato and liver krisp flavor was also included. These all-natural treats are low-fat and use only U.S. farm-grown ingredients. They smell awful to me but Shelby loves them!

photo 11

Last but certainly not least, Incredibubbles were in the box! What dog doesn’t love bubbles? Now that the weather is starting to warm up, I’m excited to take Shelby outdoors and see how she’ll chase these bubbles around. Incredibubbles are non-toxic and safe for both dogs and kids. Bonus!

photo 12

For a medium sized dog like Shelby, Bugsy’s Box costs $26 for 1 month, $23 for 3 months, and $19 for 6 months. The price is definitely comparable to BarkBox so it’s worth trying. Since Shelby loved everything in the box and the towel is so useful, I give Bugsy’s Box a “High-5″ Furrywigglebutts Paw Print Rating.

Shelby’s New Favorite Dog Food + Deal Alert + A Giveaway!

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, my Shelby is a very finicky little girl. So, when the folks at Petbrosia approached me to write an honest review about their dog food, I was a bit hesitant at first to agree since Shelby would more than likely ignore the new food. To my surprise, however, she LOVED it. In fact, I’ve never seen her run to her food bowl and chomp at her food so quickly before! It’s the strangest thing ever!

According to their website, Petbrosia uses veterinarian and nutritionist designed algorithms to create the exact formula designed for each pet. They only use high-quality, all natural ingredients that are grown and raised by farmers in the United States. With all the recent dog food recalls, food that uses USA-grown and raised ingredients is super important to me.

petbrosia

Petbrosia dog food also includes:

  • Real meat (no by-products)
  • Anti-oxidant super fruits and vegetables
  • No artificial colors or preservatives
  • Quality carbohydrates like all-natural, wholesome brown rice and sweet potatoes grown in the US. (No corn, wheat, soy, or gluten).
  • Essential minerals like iron and zinc to help boost your dog’s growth, immune system, skin, and healthy coat.
  • Glucosamine and Chondroitin are added to help maintain your dog’s healthy joints (Love this)!!!!
  • Probiotic extracts and prebiotics to encourage the growth of good bacteria in the colon.
  • Essential fatty acids to help protect your pet from heart disease, cancer, and arthritis, as well as improve your pet’s skin and coat. This includes DHA-rich Menhaden Fish Oil, which can help your pet maintain a healthy brain.

petbrosia_1

When you order Petbrosia online, you fill out a questionnaire about your dog, including their gender, breed, birth date, weight, activity level, allergy information, and body condition. I wasn’t sure if this was a marketing ploy or not, but I appreciated the fact that they were taking Shelby’s lack of activity into consideration. After you fill out all of the appropriate information, Petbrosia goes to work to create a unique blend of dog food especially for your dog.

When the food arrived in the mail, I got a special document describing Shelby’s custom blend. I really liked the fact that I could see every single ingredient listed there and feeding guidelines. I’m not sure why it says she is intact though because she is most definitely spayed. I think that was my mistake when I ordered.

petbrosia_3

This is what Shelby’s blend actually looked like. By the looks of it, I wouldn’t think she’d be interested in it. After all, she’s tried similar looking food like Halo and Merrick and has only liked the Merrick if I added water to make gravy.

petbrosia_2

I noticed that the dog food had brown rice in it and as many of my readers know, Cocker Spaniels are prone to ear infections. To help prevent those allergies, vets often recommend a grain-free diet. So, I asked Petbrosia if they had a blend that was grain-free. As it turns out, they’re about to launch a grain-free version in a few weeks (lucky us)!  That blend will be salmon and sweet potato. Woo-hoo, Shelby LOVES salmon!
I will definitely order more Petbrosia for Shelby because I’ve never seen her like a dog food this much before and it makes me giggle every time she runs to her bowl. One way of checking to see if your dog’s food is good for their digestion is to check their stool. Shelby’s stool looks super healthy so Petbrosia gets a “High-5″ Furrywigglebutts Paw Print Rating.

Planet Dog Orbee-Tuff Ball Review PLUS Another Giveaway!

In my previous review about Planet Dog, I wrote about their tasty Eats and Orbee-Tuff Snoops. Shelby was, unfortunately, not very interested in the Orbee-Tuff Snoop and almost got her snoot stuck in the snoop. So, in an effort to write an honest review about their products, I decided to find another dog that loves to chew and destroy. Enter Miles…

Miles is a Yorkie owned by one of my co-workers who has described him as an anxious little fella that loves to tear apart toys. I figured he was the perfect guinea pig to test out this tough toy. My co-worker was pleasantly surprised by the minty fresh scent of this dog toy, especially because she has a young toddler who often picks up the dog toys himself. (And again… no gross saliva smell)!

miles2

You can practically see the rage in Miles’ eyes. “Gimme that ball, mama. I see it. Gimme.. NOW!”

One look at the toy and Miles was ready to pounce on it!

miles3

Mmm… minty!

Miles took a good sniff before my co-worker threw it across the room to see how quickly Miles would tear it apart.

miles5

Miles chased after the ball around the apartment for a while. Miraculously… to my co-worker’s surprise, Miles was unable to tear it apart. Yep, it’s that TOUGH TUFF.

miles4

Weeks later, I’m thrilled to say that this dog toy has survived and Miles is still playing with it. Also, it still smells minty! For all of these reasons, I’m giving this Planet Dog Orbee-Tuff Ball dog toy  a “High-5″ Furrywigglebutts Paw Print Rating.

10 Winter Weather Pet Safety Tips + Another Giveaway!

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED. CONGRATULATIONS TO CARLA C. AND JACKIE P. BOTH OF WHOM WON JUGS OF SAFE PAW AND TO ANDY Z. WHO WON A PACKAGE OF PAWZ DOG BOOTS! THANK YOU TO EVERYBODY THAT ENTERED. PLEASE STAY TUNED FOR FUTURE GIVEAWAYS AND SHARE THESE WINTER WEATHER SAFETY TIPS WITH OTHER DOG OWNERS. THANK YOU!

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Winter weather has just begun here in New York City (1-3 inches of powder coming our way) and that’s the perfect time to review cold weather safety tips for our furry wiggle butts.

Here are some important tips to follow:

  1. Schedule a wellness exam. Some dogs, like seniors, may experience more medical problems than usual in cold weather, such as arthritis, heart conditions or diabetes. Now is the perfect time to schedule an appointment with your vet to make sure your dog’s medical conditions are stable.
  2. Double check ID tags and microchips. Unfortunately, many dogs get loose during colder months, so it’s important to make sure your pet’s ID tags and microchip information are all up to date.
  3. Keep your dog indoors. Unless your dog is relieving him/herself or exercising, it’s important to keep your four-legged family member indoors as much as possible.
  4. Don’t leave your dog in a car. This should be a given but important to reiterate. Petfinder.com says a car “can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold.”
  5. Check water bowls. Your pooch may need more hydration when it’s cold outside, so make sure you keep the water bowls full.
  6. Don’t shave your dog and consider a sweater. Fur actually keeps dogs insulated from the low temperatures so it’s actually best to let their fur grow. Provide sweaters or coats to short-haired dogs. Think sweaters are silly? Think again: Pedigree says that some dogs really need coats and Dr. Marty Becker says small dogs, seniors or ill dogs, and thin breeds like Greyhounds that have short-hair definitely need sweaters.
  7. Beware of salt and ice melters! This is especially important in urban areas. Here, in New York City, all of the sidewalks are lined with piles of salt and ice melters before and during snowstorms. They’re great for humans but super dangerous for animals. In addition to irritating your dog’s skin, they can also mess with their gastrointestinal tract, and cause weakness, disorientation, low blood pressure, seizures, heart problems, or death. Do your best to walk your dog around the salt and ice melters or take the necessary precautions… more on that in a moment!
  8. Avoid antifreeze. Harsh chemicals like antifreeze and windshield washer products are highly toxic to animals and can cause life-threatening kidney damage. It only takes a few tablespoons of the chemicals to be dangerous, so keeping antifreeze bottles sealed and away from pets is important. If your dog is exposed to antifreeze, call animal poison hotline immediately. The ASPCA has an Animal Poison Control Hotline available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year: 888-426-4435. (Note: A $65 consultation fee may be applied to your credit card).
  9. Give a rub down. After spending time outside, be sure to wipe off your dog’s paws and stomach to clean any salt, antifreeze or other chemicals that your dog may have picked up outdoors.
  10. Prepare for severe weather. Bad storms can sometimes cause power outages. Make sure you have a pet emergency kit on hand, including enough dog food, water, and medication to last up to a week or more.

Now that we’ve reviewed our winter weather pet safety tips, it’s giveaway time!

Three people will win prizes!! That’s right, THREE!!!

I’m thrilled to announce that I have not one but two amazing sponsors for today’s post: Safe Paw ice melter and Pawz dog boots. Both of these companies are dedicated to keeping your dog safe during cold weather months.

Meet Jessica, the Pit Mix + My Very First Giveaway!

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED. CONGRATULATIONS TO THERESA SPAID AND THANK YOU TO EVERYBODY THAT ENTERED. YOU HELPED MAKE MY FIRST GIVEAWAY A HUGE SUCCESS! PLEASE REMEMBER THAT JESSICA, THE PIT MIX, IS STILL LOOKING FOR A FOREVER HOME…

You already know that I have a soft spot for Cocker Spaniels, but Pitbulls tug at my heartstrings too because there are SO many of them killed every single day in New York City. If you saw the photos of dogs slated for euthanasia, you would be stunned to learn that the majority of them are Pitbulls or Pit mixes. They have a bad rap and everybody knows it. History dictates that Pitbulls were bred to fight but let’s be clear — the humans (not the dogs) are to blame for that. It’s not the breed, it’s the owner. Pitbulls tend to be extremely energetic, so if you’re thinking about adopting one – educate yourself about the breed first and be prepared to give them plenty of exercise.

Now, let me introduce you to one very special Pit mix located here in New York.

Jessica is an incredibly sweet 10 month old Pitbull Terrier waiting for her forever home with Second Chance Rescue.

Jessica 2

This poor girl has already experienced severe neglected in her short life. Not only did she just have a litter of puppies before being rescued, but Jessica is also suffering (and recovering) from mange. Despite her condition, she is beautiful inside and out with a playful personality and gorgeous amber eyes!

Jessica 4

Jessica is heartworm negative and up to date with all of her shots. She has been spayed and currently takes Ivermectin to treat the spots of mange that have not yet disappeared. Jessica LOVES people and cuddling. As you can see below, she loves to give kisses too!

Jessica 3

Jessica’s foster mom says that she loves to burrow under the covers and makes the cutest piggy snuffle noises as she settles. How can you resist this face?

Jessica 1

Jessica does have a few guarding issues, so it’s recommended that she find an adult-only home with no other dogs so she can be queen of her castle. Jessica is crate and house trained, knows “sit” and loves playing fetch with all of her toys, but as soon as you sit down, she’ll plop down on your lap and take a nap! Her current foster family believes she has a ton of love to give and just needs some consistency.

If you are interested in giving Jessica a loving forever home, please contact Second Chance Animal Rescue as soon as possible. She is waiting to hear from you!

…and now for my very first giveaway!
